The basic idea in special relativity that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light is a consequence of the lorents transformation which if they hold exactly, it would indeed be true that getting to the speed of light would require infinit energy

After a bit of research I find this to be a Mark III TRIGA reactor. According to en[dot]wikipedia[dot]org/wiki/TRIGA "The TRIGA reactor uses uranium-zirconium-hydride (UZrH) fuel". So yes, that is Cherenkov radiation (see /wiki/Cherenkov_radiation).

Is this a deuterium tritium reaction or something else? deuterium tritium reaction does not produce harmful radiation.
